ChatGPT Vision Is A Game Changer

If you’ve been following my AI journey this year, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of experimenting and finding practical nuggets amidst the tech gold rush. So when ChatGPT finally rolled out vision, I just had to dive in and share a few examples of how you can leverage this yourself…

15 Practical, Everyday Use Cases

📸 1. Image Analysis

Ever stared at an image or photograph, feeling a bit lost? ChatGPT Vision can offer deeper insights, unraveling the narrative behind the pixels. A great way to better understand obscure internet memes, for example! 🙂

📄 2. Quick Document Insights

Say goodbye to those tedious hours of poring over lengthy documents or trying to interpret perplexing screenshots. ChatGPT with Vision can distill the crux, presenting the heart of the content. I tried this with a visual tutorial explaining how to clone your voice on the iPhone:

🎨 3. Art Critique On-the-Go

Find yourself in front of an artwork that’s left you stumped? A snapshot and ChatGPT can offer insights – from historical context to artistic techniques. Here’s an example, where I asked ChatGPT about a modern art painting without providing the name of the artist or the work of art itself:

📊 4. Graph Interpretation

Baffled by complex charts? With ChatGPT, what once seemed like an inscrutable maze becomes an intelligible summary. Here’s a great example…I asked ChatGPT to decipher this inflation chart so that a child could understand it:

Those endearing but hard-to-decipher handwritten letters from Grandma or the hasty notes you jotted down? ChatGPT can transcribe and clarify. Here’s a sample postcard from Vincent Van Gogh, which ChatGPT was able to read quite well…

Struggling with a step in a visual guide? A quick screenshot and your new AI buddy will help steer you right. I tested this with an inscrutable IKEA assembly guide:

Ever seen an intriguing item and wondered about its origin or brand? Snap it, upload, and let ChatGPT embark on the product hunt. Here’s an example where I supplied an image of a jacket I thought was interesting and asked ChatGPT to recommend brands that are well known for producing them:

Choosing between two images for your presentation or blog? ChatGPT Vision can give insights based on clarity, relevance, or aesthetics. Here’s a simple example:

🌍 9. Instant Translations

Found a captivating sign in a foreign tongue? ChatGPT will not just translate but can also provide cultural nuances behind the words. Here’s ChatGPT decoding an SMS I got in a language I don’t quite understand…

🖥️ 10. Tech Troubleshooter

Those mystifying error pop-ups can now meet their match. Screenshot, upload, and get troubleshooting steps in real-time. Here I tried troubleshooting a computer problem to figure out what could be causing it…

👗 11. Fashion Consultant

Puzzling over which outfit pairs best with those new shoes? A snapshot can fetch you fashion-forward advice. Imagine having a personal fashion coach in your pocket whenever you need it! In this example I gave ChatGPT an unlabelled image of shoes and asked what sort of Jeans would be best suited in combination:

Unsure how to use that exotic vegetable in your kitchen? Or why your dish doesn’t look like the recipe photo? ChatGPT Vision is your culinary mentor. For example, I used this picture of a fruit basket and highlighted just the specific fruit I was interested in identifying – ChatGPT did a great job of identifying it:

🌱 13. Nature Buddy

Encountered a plant or critter during your nature walk? This AI can provide insights into the species and any fun facts related. In this example I gave ChatGPT a picture of a Snake Plant without labelling the image or calling out its name…it did a pretty remarkable job of identifying the plant and potential causes of what I was seeing.

🧪 14. Science Companion

Stumble upon a fascinating chemical reaction video? ChatGPT can explain the science behind the spectacle. In this case I gave ChatGPT just an image (no labels) showing the Elephant Toothpaste experiment and asked how I could recreate it in a kid-friendly manner:

📦 15. DIY Assistant (or Puzzle Solver)

Crafting a DIY masterpiece but hit a roadblock? A snapshot of where you’re stuck can garner guidance to see your project to completion. In this example I gave ChatGPT an image containing various puzzles, highlighting one in particular…it correctly identified the type of puzzle and provided helpful clues on how to go about solving it.

There you have it…just 15 examples that should get your creative juices flowing.

Frankly, leveraging ChatGPT Vision feels like stepping into a world where sci-fi is finally making its way into reality. I’m planning on integrating this new feature into my daily experiments. Will it stand up to the task? Stick around to find out!

BONUS – I had ChatGPT create the hero image for this post using Dall-E 3

Now that the latest version of Dall-E is directly integrated into ChatGPT, all I had to do was ask it to create the best possible image for this post…no more hopping around between tools! v3 also does a pretty good job of including legible text in images…something most GenAI image tools still struggle with.
