Day 10 of 30-Day AI Challenge: The Future of Vacationing and AI Trip Planning

For those just joining us, every day during this challenge, I’m going to try and do something different or better, using currently available Artificial Intelligence tools.

It’s Day 10 of the #30DayAIChallenge and it’s time to tackle a somewhat obvious application of generative AI – Vacation Inspiration and Trip Planning.

The travel industry has witnessed significant changes in recent years, with the integration of technology becoming more pronounced, albeit quite slowly in some sectors. Let’s take a quick look at how generative AI may impact various stakeholders in the travel industry, including travelers, travel agents, hotels, and online travel agencies (OTAs)…we’ll run a couple of tests too, along the way.

Travelers: Tailored Inspirations and Seamless Planning

Generative AI can redefine the travel experience for us by offering personalized vacation inspiration and seamless trip planning, much of which feels like quite a chore today. With machine learning algorithms analyzing our data, preferences, and browsing habits, AI can recommend destinations, itineraries, and activities that cater to our individual tastes. This hyper-personalized approach can save loads of time and ensure a unique, fulfilling travel experience. AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can also address queries, provide real-time information, and handle bookings, making trip planning quite efficient and hassle-free.

Let’s try a little test of our own, using ChatGPT – I asked it for some very specific destination inspiration to begin with and true to form, it delivered some pretty intriguing recommendations:

Next, I asked ChatGPT for a proper day-by-day itinerary (truncated below):

As this article in Conde Nast will tell you, Generative AI, despite its potential, still faces fundamental limitations, including a tendency to “hallucinate” or produce false information. This issue is particularly concerning in the context of travel itineraries and hotel bookings. Current AI technologies often suggest popular or over-touristed destinations and may require more specific prompts to offer better recommendations (hence my very curated ask above). At this stage, experts view generative AI as useful for creating initial drafts, but it may not be ready for mass adoption in the travel industry just yet. Still, watch this space for some pretty rapid advancement in the years ahead.

Travel Agents: Enhanced Expertise and New Business Models

The role of travel agents will need to evolve as AI takes on tasks such as data analysis, itinerary creation, and price comparison. Savvy agents can leverage AI-generated insights to enhance their expertise and provide travelers with value-added services. This symbiotic relationship between humans and AI will allow agents to focus on building meaningful relationships with clients. In terms of economy or budget travel, productivity hacks may be a game changer…and AI may also pave the way for new business models, such as subscription-based services or pay-per-use, where clients access AI-powered travel recommendations and assistance for a fee, granting travel agents more revenue streams. In terms of luxury and upper-end travel, AI may allow travel agents to generate even more curated (and reliable, fact-checked) itineraries for their clients.

Hotels: Smart Pricing and Exceptional Guest Experiences

Generative AI could improve hotel operations through dynamic, personalized ‘experience‘ bundling and pricing (building on already sophisticated Revenue Optimization systems used today) and also allow hoteliers to tap into more sophisticated features that allow bookers and loyalty members to use cash and points to curate their own complex bookings that include the hotel stay on a chosen promotion, a specific room upgrade, restaurant and Spa bookings and even a local tour or two. Furthermore, AI-enabled chatbots and virtual concierges can offer 24/7 assistance, ensuring guest satisfaction and loyalty.

The main stumbling block to speed here is the hotel industry’s reliance on fragmented, legacy technology.

Online Travel Agencies (OTAs): Streamlined Offerings and Predictive Analytics

Given the potential to deliver tailored offerings and seamless bookings, OTAs are likely to be pretty quick to jump on the generate AI bandwagon. By analyzing user data and trends, AI can provide personalized suggestions for flights, accommodations, and activities, resulting in higher conversion rates and customer satisfaction. Predictive analytics powered by AI will allow OTAs to anticipate customer needs and travel trends, helping them stay ahead of the competition. Additionally, AI-driven tools can automate customer support, manage inventory, and optimize marketing strategies, making OTAs more efficient and profitable. Given many leading OTAs aren’t stuck with legacy tech stacks, with the added potential to cut costs, I’m betting we’ll see some pretty quick new feature announcements in this space.

Expedia Group has already announced that it will launch a new ChatGPT plugin to help users simplify travel planning through the OTA platform. The plugin is developed in collaboration with OpenAI and will expand the capabilities of the ChatGPT platform to help users find suitable flights, accommodations, activities and more. The plugin will use natural language processing (NLP) to understand user queries and provide relevant information.

KAYAK has also integrated ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered language model, to serve as a virtual travel assistant, enabling conversational interactions with its search engine. Users can make natural language queries and receive personalized recommendations based on their search criteria and KAYAK’s historical travel data. The company’s official release says that “KAYAK on ChatGPT will be gradually enabled for ChatGPT users (starting with ChatGPT Plus subscribers). After additional testing, it will roll out to more users.

Conclusion

The integration of generative AI in the travel industry is going to open up new possibilities for vacation inspiration and trip planning for travelers and travel providers alike. As AI becomes more sophisticated and accessible, we can expect a travel landscape where personalized experiences, seamless planning, and enhanced services become the norm (and a lot more reliable!).
